Head and neck tumours include a variety of malignant diseases that can develop in the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, nose, paranasal sinuses, base of the skull and neck. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are common risk factors, but infections with human papilloma viruses (HPV) are also playing an increasingly important role in the development of the disease.

Early diagnosis is crucial for successful treatment. Initial signs such as persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, unclear swelling in the throat area or chronic pain should definitely be clarified by a doctor. Thanks to modern imaging techniques and specialised diagnostics, tumours can now be detected at an early stage and treated in a more targeted manner.

The treatment of head and neck tumours depends on the location, size and spread of the tumour, the detailed histological and immunological assessment and the patient's general state of health. Depending on the situation, surgical interventions, radiotherapy, drug treatments or a combination of these methods are used. In many cases, new surgical techniques, gentle radiotherapy and individually tailored drug therapies enable a higher chance of recovery and a better quality of life after treatment. Functional rehabilitation - for example to restore the ability to speak and swallow - also plays an important role in the treatment process.

Research is constantly evolving, and immunotherapies and targeted molecular therapies in particular are opening up new perspectives, especially for advanced tumour diseases. Comprehensive aftercare is also important in order to recognise relapses at an early stage and treat late effects in good time.

Comprehensive information is essential for those affected and their relatives in order to reduce fears and gain confidence in dealing with the disease. The Head and Neck Tumour Centre of the UMMD, represented by Prof. Durisin, offers you the opportunity for a personal discussion as part of the telephone forum and provides insights into modern treatment approaches and supportive measures.
